In a bold move towards energy independence and agricultural stability, Maharashtra's Godavari Marathwada Irrigation Development Corporation (GMIDC) has invited bids for a 14.3 MW ground-mounted Solar+Storage project in the Nanded district, with proposals due by September 7, 2026. This ambitious Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project, targeting the Shankarraoji Chavan Vishnupuri Project, aims to transform the crucial Vishnupuri Lift Irrigation Scheme into a self-sustaining powerhouse using integrated solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) technology. The project is a direct outcome of Maharashtra's groundbreaking Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Policy 2025-36, notified in March 2026, which mandates BESS integration for new solar projects above 100 kW and emphasizes a 'storage-first' approach to meet rising energy demand with clean power. India's BESS market is experiencing rapid growth, with Maharashtra leading the charge in adopting such systems to ensure grid stability and reliable renewable energy supply, especially crucial for agricultural regions like Marathwada which frequently face water scarcity challenges. This project is designed to bolster regional agricultural stability, making the lift irrigation scheme more reliable and reducing its dependence on conventional grid power. With bids closing soon, the focus will shift to selecting an experienced private-sector concessionaire who will develop, operate, and maintain the project for a 25-year concession period, targeting a Commercial Operation Date (COD) by FY 2028-29. This initiative, coupled with recent state cabinet approvals for land transfer fee exemptions, signals Maharashtra's commitment to expediting renewable energy development and could serve as a blueprint for other states looking to integrate renewable energy with critical infrastructure like irrigation systems, ensuring a more resilient and sustainable future for India's agricultural heartlands.
