Maharashtra Unleashes Task Force Against Illegal IVF, Sonography Centers

Maharashtra's Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar has announced the immediate formation of a Special Task Force (STF) to crack down on illegal In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and sonography centers across the state. This urgent move comes as authorities grapple with a worrying rise in unauthorized facilities engaging in illicit practices, including sex determination and exploitative egg trafficking rackets. The government is also seriously considering classifying these offenses under 'organized crime', potentially invoking the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) to hit perpetrators harder. The decision arrives amidst heightened concerns over the misuse of fertility and diagnostic technologies, fueled by a deeply entrenched societal preference for sons in many parts of India. Recent high-profile cases, like the Badlapur illegal IVF racket where vulnerable women were exploited for their eggs at meager sums, highlight the grim reality of this illicit trade. Despite the existing Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, which prohibits sex selection, enforcement has faced significant challenges, prompting the need for a dedicated task force to ensure stricter compliance and safeguard ethical medical practices.
