Two Assam Rifles personnel lost their lives in a deadly ambush by suspected militants in Manipur Ukhrul district on Monday, marking the fourth such fatal attack this year in the already volatile state. Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Havildar Chandra Mohan Singh were killed when their 40th Assam Rifles convoy was targeted with explosives and heavy gunfire on National Highway-202. This latest incident, near Nounshong Kong village, has deepened concerns over the escalating security challenges in the northeastern state. The brazen assault highlights the persistent threat posed by armed groups in Manipur, a state grappling with widespread ethnic violence since May 2023 that has pitted Meitei, Kuki-Zo, and now Naga communities against each other. While no group has claimed responsibility, the NSCN(IM) has pointed fingers at a 'breakaway Eastern Flank faction.' The incident occurred just days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed Manipur security situation, underscoring the central government's efforts to douse the flames of conflict that have claimed numerous lives this year. Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh swiftly condemned the 'acts of terror' and vowed that perpetrators would face justice, with security forces immediately launching extensive search operations. This attack serves as a stark reminder that despite ongoing efforts and the presence of forces like the Assam Rifles, achieving lasting peace in Manipur remains a complex and urgent challenge, with internal and external factors, including cross-border militant activities and illegal immigration from the Indo-Myanmar border, continuing to fuel instability.
