Mizoram's Universal Healthcare Scheme Soars, Covering Over 3.2 Lakh Families

Mizoram's ambitious Universal Healthcare Scheme (MUHCS) is making significant strides, with its second phase, MUHCS 2.0, now covering over 3.2 lakh beneficiary families across the state. This massive enrollment drive, announced by officials on Sunday, September 6, 2026, underscores the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) government's commitment to accessible healthcare, having already disbursed more than Rs 271 crore for treatment bills since the scheme's inception in 2025. The scheme, first launched as MUHCS 1.0 in March 2025 and upgraded to MUHCS 2.0 in March 2026 by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, provides cashless healthcare services through a wide network of empanelled hospitals both within and outside Mizoram. It caters to diverse groups, including general citizens, government employees, pensioners, and notably, integrates with the Centre's Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) to extend its reach. General beneficiaries can get up to Rs 5 lakh cover, while government employees enjoy unlimited coverage, ensuring a robust safety net against medical expenses. Looking ahead, Mizoram continues to fortify its healthcare infrastructure and delivery. The state recently secured a Rs 120 crore incentive under the central government's Financial Assistance to States/UTs for Public Health Infrastructure (FASPHI) scheme, recognizing its improvements in areas like Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS). Further streamlining patient access, an online medical referral system was introduced in May 2026, aiming to cut down delays and paperwork for specialized treatments. These ongoing enhancements signal a sustained push towards making quality healthcare a reality for every Mizo family.
