Heavy monsoon rains have unleashed flash floods and minor landslides across North Bengal, Sikkim, and Bhutan, bringing daily life to a grinding halt and forcing the crucial National Highway 10 (NH-10) to remain shut near Bardang, Sikkim. This vital link connecting Siliguri to Gangtok has seen repeated closures over the past days, leaving travelers stranded and the local administration scrambling for restoration amidst forecasts of continued downpours. The unrelenting rainfall has caused water levels in several rivers, including the Teesta and Torsa, to swell dangerously, submerging low-lying areas in the Dooars region and raising alarm in adjacent Bangladesh. The erratic monsoon patterns, characterized by heavy silt deposition and river course changes, have made the Himalayan slopes particularly vulnerable, intensifying concerns for both residents and the economically vital tourism sector, which faces severe stress from disrupted connectivity. Authorities, including the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), are battling continuous debris clearance on NH-10, with some sections also impacted by landslides in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting more heavy rainfall for the region in the coming days, the focus remains on urgent road repair and ensuring public safety. While no major casualties have been reported so far from the immediate events, local administrations are advising extreme caution, urging residents to stay away from swollen rivers and travelers to monitor traffic updates closely, considering alternative routes like NH 717A or the Rorathang detour, which, however, add significant travel time. The ongoing efforts highlight the region's perennial struggle with monsoon wrath and the critical need for resilient infrastructure.
