MP's Power Play: Thousands of Contract Workers Set for Permanent Posts

In a big win for labor rights, the Madhya Pradesh Energy Department has announced a new plan that will make more than 6,500 contract workers in the state's electricity companies permanent. These 'Sanvida Karmi' will get regular jobs through a special departmental examination, a move set to happen before October 2026. This decision, called the 'Contractual Personnel's New Appointment Scheme on Equivalent Regular Posts-2026,' applies to employees in MP Power Management Company and its three distribution companies, bringing long-awaited job security to many. This development follows a significant ruling by the Madhya Pradesh High Court in April 2026, which strongly stated that long-serving contract workers deserve fair pay and permanent status, and cannot be denied basic dignity. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had also pledged in January 2026 to start the process of regularizing contract workers with over ten years of service, showing the government's ongoing commitment. These actions build on the state's broader Contract Employment Policy from July 2023, which aimed to give contract employees benefits similar to permanent staff and remove yearly contract renewals. While this new scheme specifically targets electricity companies, it raises hopes for similar arrangements in the 54 other government departments where contract workers are also seeking permanent status.
