The meticulous re-examination of 11 fossil bones by a team including lead author Alan Tennyson from Te Papa and Associate Professor Nic Rawlence from the University of Otago has finally settled this debate, with the Meterchen luti fossil backing the genetic data and proving the old theory wrong. This reinterpretation highlights a far more dynamic and chaotic evolutionary history for New Zealand's unique birdlife than previously imagined, shaped by waves of different species arriving and adapting over time. Researchers say combining traditional fossil analysis with cutting-edge genetic insights is crucial to accurately reconstruct these ancient lineages.
