Mumbai 3.0 Kicks Off: Maharashtra Unveils $1.5 Trillion Vision for Urban Future

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has just unveiled a massive long-term plan, dubbed 'Mumbai 3.0,' aiming to transform the Mumbai Metropolitan Region into a $1.5 trillion economy by 2047. Speaking at the Real Estate & Infrastructure Investors' Summit (REIIS) 2026, Fadnavis highlighted ambitious redevelopment projects, new infrastructure corridors, and a big technology push, including AI-led governance, as key drivers for this monumental urban and economic growth. This bold vision marks a significant shift, moving Mumbai beyond its traditional core towards a network of self-sufficient urban hubs. At the heart of 'Mumbai 3.0' is a move to create multiple interconnected urban centers, easing the strain on central Mumbai through projects like the already operational Navi Mumbai International Airport and upcoming coastal road. Major infrastructure initiatives include the transformative Vadhavan Port, set to become one of India's largest ports, and plans for a third airport in the Virar region. The state is aggressively pushing for large-scale urban redevelopment, including the historic Dharavi slum area, with thousands of rehabilitation homes targeted for completion by 2029. The plan emphasizes heavy private sector involvement and advanced technology to drive growth and improve urban living. Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government is fast-tracking an $11 billion 'Innovation City' near the Navi Mumbai International Airport, in partnership with the Tata Group, focusing on AI data centers and semiconductor activities. Additionally, a 'Quantum Corridor' is being developed between Mumbai and Pune, aiming to position the region as a global hub for quantum technology and AI innovation. These initiatives are set to redefine Maharashtra economic landscape, with a detailed master plan for Mumbai 3.0 expected by early 2027, setting the stage for decades of transformative development.
