Mumbai is rolling out a major digital upgrade to tackle its massive construction waste problem and fight dust pollution. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to launch its Integrated Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste Management Portal, a ₹1.11-crore project designed to track debris movement across the city using advanced tech like GPS, geo-fencing, and integration with the existing AutoDCR system. This aims to halt illegal dumping and improve environmental compliance, with Trace Resource Management Pvt. Ltd. spearheading the initiative. This move comes as Mumbai grapples with approximately 8,000 metric tonnes of C&D waste daily, a volume nearly matching its regular municipal solid waste. Uncontrolled dumping has been a major contributor to dust pollution, flooding risks, and deteriorating air quality, prompting stricter regulations. The new portal is a direct response to the C&D Waste Management Rules, 2025, and mandates from the Bombay High Court and a meeting chaired by the Maharashtra Chief Secretary in May 2026, all pushing for comprehensive digital monitoring of waste from its origin to final disposal. Expected to go live by the end of July, the portal won't just track waste; it will also introduce a 'soil exchange platform' to promote a circular economy by allowing excavated soil to be reused for other projects. This initiative builds on recent efforts by the BMC to enhance pollution control, including the procurement of advanced dust-mitigation vehicles earlier this year and the recent AI integration into the AutoDCR system for faster building approvals. The success of this digital overhaul will be crucial in ensuring Mumbai's rapid development doesn't come at the cost of its environment.
