Myanmar military junta has established a new 'ASEAN Affairs Committee' in a bold move to reclaim its full standing within the regional bloc, just weeks before a critical ASEAN Summit in Manila. The committee, which held its first meeting on October 13, 2026, chaired by Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe, aims to restore the country's 'original role and rights' in ASEAN, despite the ongoing civil war and widespread international condemnation of the regime. This aggressive push for reintegration comes five years after ASEAN barred junta leader Min Aung Hlaing from top-level meetings for failing to implement the Five-Point Consensus, a peace plan calling for an immediate end to violence and inclusive dialogue. While the junta has largely rejected the 5PC, some ASEAN members like Thailand, Laos, and Malaysia have recently engaged bilaterally with Min Aung Hlaing, signaling a fractured approach within the bloc. All eyes are now on the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Manila from November 16-18, 2026, where the Philippines, as current chair, is expected to lead discussions on a 'new approach' to the Myanmar crisis. With a humanitarian mission also being finalized, the summit will test whether ASEAN can present a united front or if Myanmar diplomatic offensive, backed by some sympathetic members, will succeed in normalizing the junta on the regional stage.
