Nagaland, a state often known for its serene landscapes, is now making a significant mark in the high-tech world of drone technology, transforming a modest mapping initiative into a thriving Centre of Excellence. Just this week, Governor Nand Kishore Yadav lauded the Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre (NGISRSC) Drone Centre of Excellence (DCoE) for its impressive strides in training and innovation, which are actively preparing its youth for the jobs of tomorrow. This facility now offers everything from DGCA-compliant Remote Pilot Certificate courses to specialized First-Person View (FPV) Training and drone repair, positioning the state as a burgeoning hub for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This homegrown success story perfectly aligns with India's broader national vision to boost its indigenous drone ecosystem and empower its workforce with cutting-edge skills. With 72 trainees already graduated and 70 more selected under the Nagaland Skill and Entrepreneurship Development Mission (NSEDM), the DCoE is directly addressing a projected demand for 500 drone pilots in the Northeast alone, applying these skills across critical sectors like agriculture, infrastructure mapping, and disaster management. The focus on DGCA-compliant training ensures that Nagaland's pilots meet national regulatory standards, crucial for safe and legal operations via the Digital Sky Platform. Looking ahead, Nagaland isn't just stopping at training; it's eyeing a future as a regional innovation and manufacturing powerhouse. Plans are already in motion to establish a dedicated State Geospatial Campus and an Advanced Drone Technology and UAV Innovation Hub, which will explore cutting-edge areas like AI-enabled drones, LiDAR technology, and even local drone manufacturing. This ambitious roadmap aims to reduce dependence on imports and firmly plant Nagaland on India's technological map, creating sustainable enterprises and specialized employment opportunities within the region.
