NEERI Filters Bring Lifeline of Safe Water to Flood-Ravaged Assam

As Assam battles its devastating 2026 floods, bringing clean drinking water to over 1.6 lakh affected people has become a critical challenge. In a major relief effort, scientists from the CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) have rapidly deployed 100 units of their innovative NEERI-ZAR zero-energy water filtration system across hard-hit districts like Jorhat, Charaideo, and Sivasagar, ensuring communities have access to safe potable water without electricity. These gravity-based water filter are a game-changer, designed to purify contaminated ambient water from rivers and wells, effectively tackling suspended matter, turbidity, and dangerous microbial contamination, which is a major concern for waterborne diseases during floods. The technology, developed during Rajasthan's 2006 deluge and used in multiple Indian disasters since, offers both household and community-level units, capable of providing thousands of litres of clean water daily for drinking and cooking. The initiative also strategically cuts down on the environmental and financial burden of plastic bottled water. With Assam's flood situation still grim, claiming over 100 lives and submerging vast agricultural lands, the rapid, local assembly of NEERI-ZAR units at CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat, points to a crucial model for disaster response. As the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) continues relief operations and the state government plans compensation, scaling up such sustainable, easily deployable solutions will be vital to build resilience against the increasingly severe annual floods, exacerbated by climate change.
