New 'Karan 20' Sugarcane Offers Sweet Hope for UP's Ailing Sugar Industry

Uttar Pradesh once-dominant sugar industry is in crisis, with output plummeting from 126.4 lakh tonnes in 2019-20 to 89.5 lakh tonnes in 2025-26, largely due to the devastating Red Rot fungal disease wiping out the widely cultivated Co-0238 (Karan 4) sugarcane variety. But now, a new hero, Co-20016 (Karan 20), developed by the ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, is poised to bring sweet relief, having already passed key identification trials and awaiting final government approval next month. The rapid decline follows years of heavy reliance on Co-0238, a 'wonder variety' that unfortunately succumbed to the aggressive CF13 pathotype of Red Rot, a consequence of widespread monoculture farming. Experts, including the original breeder, had cautioned against this over-cultivation. With Assembly elections looming in February-March 2027, the state's sugar woes have become a politically sensitive issue, pressing the need for urgent solutions beyond the nearly one-fifth drop in cane crushed by UP's 120-odd mills. The industry is now pinning its hopes on Co-20016, which demonstrated superior yields and Red Rot resistance in trials, with official release anticipated in October 2026. Farmers could start planting this new variety as early as the spring season next year. To ensure future resilience, the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association and ICAR-Indian Sugarcane Research Institute are also investing in an Advanced Centre for Quality Sugarcane Seed Production, aiming for systematic replacement of older varieties and preventing another agricultural disaster.
