Myanmar Airways International (MAI) has officially launched its direct flight route connecting Yangon with Chengdu, the capital of China's Sichuan Province, on Thursday, October 15, 2026. The inaugural flight carried 134 Myanmar group tourists and 98 business travelers, marking a significant step to slash travel times and costs, and supercharge cross-border exchanges in tourism, trade, and investment between the two regions. This new air link isn't just about faster travel; it's a strategic piece of the puzzle within China's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), specifically bolstering the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC). The corridor aims to connect China's Yunnan Province through Myanmar's key economic centers like Mandalay and Yangon to the Indian Ocean via the Kyaukphyu seaport, with the new flight expected to facilitate a broader range of economic and cultural cooperation. With bilateral trade hitting $11.37 billion in the first half of 2026, and China being Myanmar's largest trading partner and investor, enhanced connectivity is crucial for deeper economic integration, especially for Chengdu-based enterprises eyeing the Myanmar market. Looking ahead, the route, initially operating three flights every two weeks, is expected to expand to three flights weekly, further cementing Myanmar's role in regional connectivity as MAI continues its aggressive international network expansion. This development comes as Myanmar actively seeks to revitalize its tourism sector and attract more foreign investment, despite ongoing internal economic challenges. The enhanced air bridge creates a vital pathway for both nations to deepen their economic partnership and cultural ties, with plans even for a sister-city relationship between Yangon and Chengdu on the horizon.
