Nigeria's Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has officially started setting up 45 new Innovation Hubs across public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide. This big step aims to boost local research, push new technology, and help turn academic ideas into products that can be sold, directly boosting Nigeria's economy. These hubs are being built in all six of the country's main regions to ensure widespread development and practical problem-solving. This initiative marks a clear shift by TETFund to move beyond simply funding education to actively building a knowledge-based economy and reducing the country's reliance on foreign technology. The new hubs are closely linked to the ongoing Research for Impact (R4i) Initiative, which trains academics to create real-world solutions and businesses; some participants have already developed and patented new products. TETFund Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, whose views were shared by Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Babatunde Olajide, stressed that Nigeria must develop its own solutions to face its unique challenges, encouraging teamwork and research focused on what the market needs. Looking ahead, these Innovation Hubs are expected to become key places for creating new businesses and jobs, connecting schools with industries. The R4i program is also expanding, bringing together more researchers from different fields to work together, which shows a stronger commitment to this goal. With the 2026 National Research Fair and Exhibition also planning to connect inventors with investors, Nigeria is clearly working hard to become a leading country for new ideas, powered by its own people's creativity.
