Nine major ports across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have hoisted 'Distant Cautionary Signal No. 1' as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of a developing cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal. This preliminary alert signals potential rough seas and impending weather disruptions, urging coastal communities and maritime operations to brace for impact. The warning covers crucial hubs like Chennai, Thoothukudi, and Karaikal, indicating widespread concern across the region. The IMD latest bulletin highlights a low-pressure area intensifying over the central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, which strengthened into a well-marked low-pressure area on Saturday and is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm by Monday. This system is projected to move west-northwestwards and make landfall near the Andhra Pradesh coast around October 28, bringing with it anticipated very heavy rainfall and strong winds, with gusts up to 140 kmph. Local disaster management teams and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are already activating their protocols, recalling recent memory of severe cyclone that have battered the region and disrupted lives and livelihoods significantly. Authorities have strongly advised fishermen to return to shore and avoid venturing into the deep sea, while coastal residents are being briefed on necessary precautionary measures. Emergency response centers are on high alert, and evacuation plans for low-lying areas are being reviewed, with schools already closed in some affected districts of Tamil Nadu. The next 24-48 hours will be crucial in determining the cyclone trajectory and intensity, with continuous monitoring by the IMD expected to provide more specific advisories as the situation unfolds, underscoring the critical need for vigilance.
