The National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, just dropped a big one: a proposed ₹440 crore Research, Innovation, and Technology Enterprise (RITE) Park on its campus. Announced by Director B. Ravi at the Silicon Beach Dialogue Series on Friday, this sprawling 1.5 lakh sq. ft. facility aims to supercharge technology and innovation across Karnataka, especially outside the bustling tech hub of Bengaluru. This move isn't happening in a vacuum; it's a direct shot in the arm for Karnataka ambitious plan to decentralize its tech prowess, moving beyond Bengaluru's saturation. The Karnataka State Policy and Planning Commission (KSPPC) recently outlined a 'New Roadmap 2026' to bolster innovation in Tier-II and Tier-III cities like Mangaluru, where NIT-K is located. It also aligns perfectly with the 'Silicon Beach Program,' an initiative specifically designed to transform coastal Karnataka into a major technology and innovation hotspot, already drawing senior tech professionals back to the region. While the proposal is fresh, groundwork is already being laid, including a directive from NIT-K Finance Committee to reclaim land currently underutilized by the NITK-Science, Technology and Entrepreneur's Park (STEP) Society for this new venture. Funding for such research parks at top NITs is expected to come from a 50-50 split between an Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan and the institutes' own funds, indicating a broader national push for research infrastructure. This park, alongside Karnataka recent investments in accelerators and biotech infrastructure, signals a serious commitment to fostering a vibrant, distributed innovation ecosystem.
