In a remarkable display of bureaucratic speed, Odisha has swiftly handed over land documents for the colossal $11.5 billion (₹1.08 lakh crore) integrated aluminium project, a joint venture between Adani Enterprises and Abu Dhabi-based International Resources Holding (IRH). The state's Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, personally oversaw the transfer on September 9, just 67 days after the initial investment agreement was inked, setting a new benchmark for facilitating large-scale investments in India. This rapid land allocation for India's largest foreign direct investment in metallurgy is more than just an isolated deal; it's a strong signal of Odisha aggressive push to become a global industrial hub. The project, encompassing a 4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) alumina refinery and a 2 MTPA aluminium smelter spread across Sundargarh and Rayagada district, is expected to generate 53,500 jobs and forms a significant part of the ₹2.43 trillion in investment proposals secured during Chief Minister Majhi's recent UAE roadshow. This ambitious expansion aims to challenge the established players like Hindalco and Vedanta Aluminium, fundamentally reshaping India's aluminium sector. With land now secured, the focus shifts to project execution, which will unfold in two phases with initial investments of ₹66,000 crore. This development not only underscores the Adani Group and IRH commitment to India's burgeoning industrial landscape but also aligns with Odisha 'Samruddha Odisha 2036' vision for economic prosperity and India's broader 'Viksit Bharat 2047' goal. As construction begins, industry watchers will keenly observe how quickly this massive complex, including its 4,000 MW captive power plant and downstream manufacturing park, takes shape and how it influences India's position in the global aluminium supply chain.
