Odisha has made a significant leap, securing the fifth position nationally in NITI Aayog new Investment Friendliness Index (IFI) 2026, a move hailed by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi as a testament to the state's investor-friendly policies. The state, which also ranks fourth among large Indian states, is actively pushing for job creation, skill enhancement, and a vibrant startup ecosystem, underscoring its commitment to broad economic growth. This top-tier recognition, announced on July 17, 2026, places Odisha alongside economic powerhouses like Gujarat and Maharashtra, highlighting its robust resource base and sound financial management. This improved standing comes as Odisha has seen a flurry of investment approvals, totaling over ₹81,000 crore in just the last two months. Key projects approved in July 2026 alone include a global development center by HCL Technologies Ltd and an alkaline electrolyser manufacturing unit by ACME Cleantech Solutions Pvt Ltd, collectively promising nearly 23,000 new jobs. The state's strong performance in metallic mineral and coal production, coupled with prudent fiscal health, has been instrumental, even as NITI Aayog pointed out the need to boost foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and improve regulatory ease. Looking ahead, Odisha is doubling down on its 'Startup Odisha' initiative and 'NUA Odisha' scheme, budgeting ₹100 crore to train one lakh youth in emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence. With Chief Minister Majhi committing to continuous reforms and infrastructure upgrades, the focus remains on transforming the state into a preferred investment destination that actively nurtures local talent and entrepreneurial spirit. Investors will be keenly watching how these ongoing policy efforts translate into sustained economic diversification and greater FDI.
