Pakistan and the Maldives have just signed a whopping 20 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), aiming to boost their cooperation in everything from defence and maritime security to trade and technology. This significant move happened during Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu three-day state visit to Islamabad, the first by a Maldivian head of state in over a decade, underscoring a clear push for closer ties between the two nations. The two countries are also looking to dramatically increase their bilateral trade, targeting an ambitious $200 million within the next two years, up from a modest $13.9 million. This flurry of agreements comes at a geopolitically sensitive time in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). President Muizzu, who came to power on an 'India Out' campaign, has been actively steering the Maldives towards a foreign policy of 'strategic autonomy,' seeking to diversify partnerships beyond traditional allies. While his government has also worked to repair ties with India, this outreach to Pakistan, including discussions with Pakistan powerful army chief, is being closely watched by New Delhi, which views the Maldives as crucial to its own maritime security interests. The visit also coincided with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and the Maldives, adding symbolic weight to the fresh wave of engagements. Going forward, the real test will be how quickly these numerous MoUs translate into concrete projects and measurable benefits for both countries. With defence cooperation and maritime security on the agenda, alongside efforts to enhance connectivity through direct flights and revive the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), the coming months will reveal the true depth of this revitalised partnership. Observers will be keen to see if these diplomatic ambitions lead to sustained influence for Pakistan in India's strategic neighbourhood, and how other regional powers respond to the Maldives' expanding network of alliances.
