Israeli food-tech innovator Plantopia has secured $9 million in new funding, propelling its unique 'molecular farming' technology closer to commercial production of dairy proteins without cows. This significant seed round, led by dairy giant Schreiber Foods and Siddhi Capital, brings Plantopia total investment to over $16 million as it prepares to launch its first manufacturing facility later this year. The startup's breakthrough allows plants, specifically genetically engineered sprouted oats, to produce casein identical to what's found in cow's milk, offering a lactose-free and animal-free alternative for products like mozzarella cheese. This method marks a clever shortcut compared to the more capital-intensive 'precision fermentation' technology used by many alternative protein companies, which relies on microorganisms in large bioreactors. Plantopia approach leverages indoor vertical farming of sprouts, which they claim drastically cuts down on production costs and environmental impact, needing no livestock, extensive farmland, or even sunlight. The timing is spot on, with global demand for dairy proteins on the rise, partly due to changing consumer habits and the growing use of GLP-1 weight-loss medications which increase the need for protein. With this fresh capital, Plantopia is transitioning from research to full-scale manufacturing, with a new facility in Kibbutz Sdot Yam expected to start operations in the third quarter of 2026. The company is initially targeting the massive $50 billion North American casein market, aiming to supply food manufacturers with its animal-free protein. If successful, this could fundamentally change how dairy products are made, offering a sustainable and ethical option that performs just like the real deal.
