Punjab National Bank (PNB) has just inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Digital India BHASHINI, a major government initiative, to bring AI-powered multilingual banking to its digital platforms. Announced on July 15, 2026, this move is set to break down language barriers, allowing millions of Indian customers to manage their finances in their own preferred regional language through voice and text. This partnership significantly advances the goal of financial inclusion across the country. This isn't PNB first foray into AI, as its existing PIHU chatbot already offers services in 15 Indian languages. However, the collaboration with BHASHINI, which is part of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) National Language Translation Mission, represents a deeper integration of advanced AI and language technology into the bank's core digital infrastructure. It aligns with the wider government push to leverage Digital Public Infrastructure and Artificial Intelligence for inclusive growth, following a similar agreement between Digital India BHASHINI and the Reserve Bank of India in February 2026 to develop a 'Banking BHASHINI' model for all 22 scheduled Indian languages. Such initiatives are crucial for reaching underserved populations, especially in rural and regional areas, where English or Hindi might not be the primary language. Looking ahead, the integration of BHASHINI's indigenous multilingual AI ecosystem into PNB services is expected to accelerate the adoption of digital banking among diverse linguistic communities. PNB has already earmarked ₹3,400 crore for IT and AI investments, demonstrating its commitment to digital transformation and addressing cyber-fraud risks. This partnership will likely lead to more intuitive and citizen-centric financial services, empowering customers to engage confidently and pushing India's financial sector closer to full digital inclusion.
