Punjab Defies Centre, Demands E20 Fuel Rollout Suspension Amidst Widespread Protests

The Punjab Assembly has passed a strong resolution urging the Centre to immediately review and suspend the mandatory rollout of E20 fuel, a petrol blend containing 20% ethanol, until all concerns from consumers, vehicle owners, and states are fully addressed. This defiant move from the AAP government in Punjab comes as AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal led a massive march towards the Prime Minister's residence in Delhi, carrying over 2.30 lakh public petitions against the policy. The standoff highlights a growing divide over India's aggressive ethanol blending targets. While the Centre champions E20 for its potential to reduce crude oil imports and enhance energy security, critics, including the Punjab government, point to alarming reports of reduced fuel efficiency (a 3-10% drop) and accelerated wear and tear in older, non-compatible vehicles.
