Punjab Plunges into Deep Power Crisis as Demand Skyrockets, Thermal Units Fail

Punjab is currently grappling with a severe electricity shortage, plunging its industrial and agricultural sectors into extensive power cuts of 3-4 hours daily. The crisis has even extended to residential areas, disrupting daily life across the state. This critical situation stems from an unprecedented surge in electricity demand, which has hit a staggering 16,519 Megawatt (MW), marking a 4,000 MW increase compared to last year's figures. The sharp rise in demand is compounded by significant operational challenges within the state's power infrastructure. Two crucial Power Generation Units out of fifteen, located at the Rajpura Thermal Plant and the Talwandi Sabo Power Plant, are currently non-functional due to Technical Faults. These plant shutdowns reduce the overall available Power Supply, leaving the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) struggling to match the soaring Electricity Demand, especially during peak hours. As the state heads into a challenging period, authorities will need to swiftly address the Technical Faults and explore emergency power procurement options to stabilize the Electricity Grid. Businesses and farmers are bracing for continued disruptions, while the government faces mounting pressure to ensure a reliable Power Supply. How quickly these critical Power Generation Units can be brought back online will be key to easing the Punjab Power Crisis and preventing further economic and social strain.
