Punjab Suspends DSP Over Barnala Lathi-Charge; Protests Intensify Against Police Action

The Punjab Government has suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Satbir Singh Bains following a severe lathi-charge on protesting sanitation workers, including women, in Barnala on July 22. This decisive administrative action, announced after widespread public and political outcry, also saw the transfer of Station House Officer (SHO) Lakhwinder Singh as workers threaten wider agitation. The incident unfolded when striking sanitation workers, demanding regularisation of their services, opposed a municipal drive to clear garbage, which was initiated under directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The confrontation escalated into a violent lathi-charge by police, leaving 18 sanitation workers and four police personnel injured. The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) has also intervened, seeking a detailed report from the state. Now, the focus shifts to whether the Punjab government will meet the protesters' demands for the dismissal of the SHO and the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against all involved police personnel, including provisions under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Sanitation worker unions have warned of a statewide agitation from Monday if their demands are not fully addressed, keeping the pressure on the state administration for swift and comprehensive justice.
