Good news for Delhi's public health system: Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital has finally received the crucial Fire Safety Clearance for its much-awaited 666-bed Super Speciality Block. This 11-storey facility, built at a cost of ₹482 crore, is a game-changer, set to dramatically boost the hospital's capacity and bring advanced medical treatments closer to thousands of patients from Delhi and nearby states. The green light for this Super Speciality Block (SSB) comes after a long wait, which saw delays due to various administrative hurdles, including concerns from the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) over parking and other issues. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was even filed in the Delhi High Court by civil rights group Social Jurist to push for its quick operationalization, with the court directing authorities to speed up necessary steps, including staff recruitment. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda recently reviewed the hospital's developments, emphasizing the need for patient-centric care, underscoring the block's importance. With the fire clearance now secured, the hospital is ready to start commissioning the block, which will add 666 beds, increasing RML's total capacity from 1,538 to 2,204 beds. This means more specialized care, including state-of-the-art facilities for Oncology, Liver Transplantation, and critical care services, reducing long waiting times for patients. While a specific launch date for services hasn't been announced, this clearance paves the way for the facility to become fully operational soon, offering relief to the overburdened healthcare infrastructure in the capital.
