A discarded piece of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is on an unplanned collision course with the Moon, expected to slam into its surface on Wednesday, August 5, at over 5,000 miles per hour. This massive chunk of space junk, designated 2025-010D, will strike near the Einstein Crater on the Moon western edge, promising a rare scientific opportunity to study hypervelocity impacts and the lunar subsurface. The upper stage, which launched in January 2025 carrying Firefly Aerospace Blue Ghost Mission 1 and ispace Hakuto-R Mission 2 landers, simply ran out of fuel to return to Earth or escape the Earth-Moon system's gravity, entering a chaotic orbit. While not the first human-made object to unintentionally hit the Moon—a Chinese rocket stage created a double crater in 2022—this incident highlights the increasing problem of uncontrolled space debris and the lack of clear rules for disposing of old rocket parts in deep space. Scientists are keen to observe the aftermath. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and South Korea's Danuri orbiter are positioned to capture before-and-after images of the impact site, hoping to reveal new details about crater formation and the behavior of lunar regolith. Though the impact flash might be too faint for Earth-based viewing, the resulting dust plume could offer a unique, albeit accidental, window into the Moon geology, pushing conversations around space traffic management for our increasingly crowded cosmic neighborhood.
