Russian airline eyes direct Cebu flights

S7 Siberian Airlines, one of Russia's largest carriers, is actively seeking regulatory approval from the Philippine Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) to restart direct flights to both Manila and Cebu. This pivotal move, announced by Philippine Ambassador to Russia Igor Garlit Bailen during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. working visit to Kazan for the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit, signals a strategic push to significantly boost Russian tourist arrivals and deepen economic ties between the two nations. The proposed routes would connect Cebu and Manila directly with the Siberian cities of Irkutsk, Vladivostok, and Khabarovsk. The Philippines is keen to tap Russia as a 'non-traditional' tourism market, recognizing the higher spending patterns of Russian travelers, who are particularly drawn to the country's renowned beaches like Boracay and El Nido. This initiative builds on recent successes, with another Siberian airline, IrAero, having launched direct chartered flights from Irkutsk and Khabarovsk to Kalibo, Aklan, last year. The timing aligns with the 50th anniversary of Russia-Philippines diplomatic relations, emphasizing a broader diplomatic and economic re-engagement, further highlighted by President Marcos Jr.'s recent bilateral discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on energy and food security.
