India's economy is taking a massive hit from an unexpected foe: corrosion. A fresh report from the Nomura Research Institute (NRI) reveals that the silent decay of metals costs the nation a staggering ₹14.1 trillion annually, equivalent to 4.3% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This colossal loss, primarily crippling critical sectors like infrastructure and energy, is far above the global average of 3.4% GDP loss to corrosion and could be slashed by nearly ₹5 trillion if better corrosion-management practices are adopted. The report, titled 'Built to Last: Adopting Global Best Practices to Reduce Corrosion Losses in India's Infrastructure,' underscores that India's rapid expansion in infrastructure, urbanisation, and manufacturing is increasing vulnerability to corrosion, while current engineering practices prioritize upfront construction costs over long-term asset performance. This short-sighted approach directly threatens the nation's ambitious 'Viksit Bharat' vision to become a $30-40 trillion economy by 2047. The power generation and transmission sector, telecommunications, Indian Railways, and the automotive sector are among the worst-affected, facing premature deterioration and inflated maintenance expenses. Moving forward, the NRI report strongly advocates for a systemic shift, urging India to treat corrosion as a critical economic and policy issue, not just an engineering hurdle. Key recommendations include adopting lifecycle cost analysis for public projects, strengthening Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to include exposure-based durability requirements, and mandating stronger corrosion protection for steel-intensive sectors. Industry bodies, like the stainless steel sector, are already calling for a dedicated National Anti-Corrosion Policy. The focus is now on embracing modern testing methods, predictive corrosion management, and innovative corrosion-resistant materials to secure India's assets and economic future.
