India's largest public sector lender, State Bank of India (SBI), experienced a 45-minute disruption to its critical digital banking services, including UPI, YONO, NEFT, and RTGS, early morning on October 24 for scheduled maintenance. This temporary shutdown came just as the bank confirmed a data leak affecting 3,897 of its customers, whose personal information was found exposed on the dark web after an investigation into 3.75 lakh (375,000) records. This incident isn't new territory for SBI, which has faced similar scheduled service interruptions and cybersecurity alerts in the past, highlighting the ongoing challenges in safeguarding vast digital infrastructures against evolving threats. The leaked data reportedly includes sensitive details like names, mobile numbers, dates of birth, and residential addresses, raising serious concerns about identity theft and financial fraud, despite SBI's assurance that customer funds remain safe. Alerts about the breach were first received on October 16 from various intelligence agencies, prompting a swift internal and external investigation. Moving forward, SBI has already notified affected customers and emphasized the importance of practicing safe digital banking, urging vigilance against suspicious activities. This event underscores the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures and strict adherence to regulatory frameworks like the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and the latest RBI Cybersecurity Framework, which aim to protect customer data in India's rapidly expanding digital economy. As investigations continue, customers should remain alert and report any unusual banking activity promptly.
