Singpass Passkey Expands to Android, Fortifying Singapore's Fight Against Scams

Singapore's national digital identity system, Singpass, has rolled out its advanced passkey feature to Android users, a major move to significantly boost protection against pervasive phishing scams. This follows a successful launch for iPhone (iOS) users in July, bringing a new, password-free login method to millions across the island. The Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech) announced that Android users will start receiving notifications today to create their passkey, transforming their mobile devices into secure digital keys for accessing over 1,400 government and private-sector services. This new system uses a sophisticated pair of encryption keys – a private key kept securely on the user's device and a public key registered with Singpass – making it virtually impossible for scammers to intercept login details or trick users into authenticating on fake websites. Unlike traditional passwords or QR code, passkey are device-bound and phishing-resistant, meaning they only work on legitimate Singpass login domains. Singapore has seen millions lost to phishing scams in recent years, making this upgrade a critical step in safeguarding digital transactions and user trust. With approximately 800,000 iPhone users already having adopted passkey since July, this Android expansion marks a significant push towards a more secure, password-free digital future for Singapore's 5.5 million Singpass users. GovTech isn't stopping there, planning to extend passkey support to desktop users by the end of 2026. This ongoing digital security evolution is set to redefine how citizens interact with online services, making digital life safer and more seamless.
