South Korean chip powerhouse SK Hynix has just reported a staggering more than seven-fold jump in its third-quarter operating profit, hitting a record 83.3 trillion won, far exceeding market expectations. This massive surge, driven by explosive global demand for AI infrastructure, underscores the company's critical role in powering the artificial intelligence revolution and signals a robust, ongoing memory chip boom. The stellar performance comes as SK Hynix, a key supplier to AI giant Nvidia, sees strong sales of its advanced memory chips like HBM4 and server DDR5. The company has boldly projected that the demand for memory chips will continue to outpace supply well beyond 2030, reinforcing a 'memory supercycle' where chip prices remain high due to insatiable AI needs. SK Hynix has also committed an eye-watering 100 trillion won in shareholder returns for fiscal year 2026, including significant cash dividends and share buybacks, partly boosted by gains from its Kioxia investment. Looking ahead, SK Hynix long-term agreements with major customers now cover over half of its production capacity for 2027 and 2028, with current negotiations effectively booking out DRAM and HBM volumes through 2029. This forward visibility suggests a sustained period of growth, even as the company had to recently halt plans for a Solidigm IPO due to market conditions. As HBM4 rapidly overtakes HBM3E as the industry standard, all eyes will be on SK Hynix ability to further ramp up its advanced production facilities to meet this relentless AI-driven demand.
