Indian women's cricket is entering a fresh chapter as star batter Smriti Mandhana has been named the new captain across all formats, taking over from the highly successful Harmanpreet Kaur. This major leadership shuffle, announced on Tuesday, October 6, also sees young sensation Shafali Verma stepping up as the T20I vice-captain, while experienced all-rounder Deepti Sharma will be Mandhana's deputy in ODIs. Harmanpreet Kaur tenure was historic, including leading India to their first-ever Women's ODI World Cup title in 2025 and securing back-to-back Asian Games gold medals in 2023 and 2026, alongside four Asia Cup victories. However, an early exit from the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 prompted a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) review meeting on Monday, setting the stage for these changes despite recent triumphs. Mandhana, who previously guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to two Women's Premier League titles, brings her own proven leadership experience to this crucial role. The new leadership team faces its first test quickly with a home series against the Zimbabwe Women's Cricket Team this month, featuring T20Is in Raipur and ODIs in Vadodara. With the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 in England and Wales on the horizon, followed by the inaugural ICC Women's Champions Trophy in India in February 2027, Mandhana and her deputies will be keenly watched as they aim to build on India's strong cricketing foundation and push for more international glory.
