Consumers are feeling the pinch as sugar and jaggery prices in Karnataka skyrocket, with traders directly blaming the central government ambitious E20 ethanol-blending policy for creating domestic shortages. Retail sugar prices have seen a sharp increase, jumping by nearly 20 percent in some markets from Rs 48 to Rs 56 per kilogram between July 20 and August 20, with some fearing prices could hit Rs 100 if the trend continues. This sudden surge, happening just ahead of India's crucial festive season, has ignited a fierce debate about the balance between energy security and the affordability of essential food items for ordinary households. The core of the issue lies in India's drive to achieve 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol (E20) by 2025-26, a target already met, aimed at reducing dependence on costly crude oil imports. However, critics argue that diverting sugarcane, a key raw material for both sugar and ethanol, to fuel production has directly impacted sugar availability, a claim the central government denies, attributing the price hike instead to lower production due to adverse weather and crop damage, alongside increased demand. Despite the government's assertion that less sugarcane is now used for ethanol, with grains like maize contributing more, a significant volume of sugar equivalent, around 3 million tonnes, was still diverted for ethanol in 2025-26. In response to the escalating crisis, New Delhi has implemented several measures: banning sugar exports until September 2026, imposing stock limits of 400 tonnes on traders, and restricting bulk consumers to 15 days' worth of stock. Additionally, the government has approved the duty-free import of 10 lakh metric tonnes of raw sugar to boost domestic supply and is encouraging mills to start crushing earlier in October. As the festive season approaches, these interventions are critical, but the ongoing 'food vs. fuel dilemma' poses a significant challenge for policymakers to ensure both energy independence and consumer affordability.
