Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has just expanded the state's popular free breakfast program, now officially known as the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme, to include students from Classes 6 to 8. This ambitious move, launched on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, will provide nutritious morning meals to an additional 15.30 lakh students across 15,454 government and government-aided schools, bringing the total beneficiaries to approximately 34.64 lakh students. The state has allocated a substantial Rs 724 crore for the scheme, underscoring its commitment to student welfare. This expansion builds on the foundation laid by the previous M.K. Stalin-led government, which first introduced the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme in 2022 for primary school students. Renaming the initiative after the respected former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj highlights the continuity of welfare policies focused on education and child nutrition in Tamil Nadu. The program directly tackles classroom hunger, a key factor impacting student concentration, attendance, and ultimately, academic performance, with studies consistently showing positive impacts on school enrollment and retention. The scheme's implementation involves integrated kitchens in urban areas and active participation from Self-Help Groups in rural regions, ensuring wide reach. Looking ahead, the scheme aims to further solidify its impact on public education and health outcomes, though it faces temporary deferrals in Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts due to the Model Code of Conduct in force for by-elections. The government will be closely monitoring the program's effectiveness, potentially considering menu diversification in the future to keep students engaged. This expansion signals Tamil Nadu's ongoing dedication to nurturing its youth through comprehensive social welfare initiatives, setting a benchmark for other states.
