Tamil Nadu's Free Bus Scheme Expands: Millions of Women to Gain Mobility

Tamil Nadu is set to significantly expand its 'Vettri Payanam' free bus travel scheme for women and transgender persons from October 2, covering 12,692 government buses across the state. This move, announced by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, aims to benefit approximately 8.43 million women daily by removing travel cost barriers to education, work, and essential services. The expansion comes just days after a high-level review meeting where final preparations were confirmed, with trial runs scheduled for September 27. Previously known as 'Vidiyal Payanam', the scheme initially offered free travel only on ordinary city buses and hill routes up to 40 km. The new 'Vettri Payanam' will now include Express, Limited Stop Service (LSS), Deluxe buses in metropolitan areas, and mofussil ordinary and hill ordinary buses traveling beyond 40 km, vastly increasing access. This initiative, which is projected to cost the state around ₹6,000 crore annually, reflects the Tamil Nadu government's broader commitment to social justice and women's empowerment, building on previous welfare measures. With Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs) already integrated into the expanded fleet and system testing nearing completion by September 25, the October 2 launch on Gandhi Jayanti marks a major step forward. The scheme is expected to dramatically enhance mobility and economic independence for women, particularly those in rural and semi-urban areas. Officials will be issuing detailed instructions to transport corporations and bus crews, as the government looks to solidify its welfare agenda and ensure seamless implementation for millions of daily commuters.
