Tirupati district is taking a big step towards a greener future by setting up a dedicated 'Greening Corporation'. This new body will lead the charge to increase the district's green cover from the current 41% to an ambitious 50% by 2047, starting with a target of planting 53 lakh saplings this year alone. It is a clear sign that local authorities are serious about tackling environmental challenges head-on. This local initiative is part of a larger, state-wide push by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who has set a similar 50% green cover target for the entire state by 2047, aiming for 37% by 2030. The district's efforts will also connect with the 'Great Green Wall of Andhra Pradesh' initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, which aims to create a massive 5-km wide natural shield along the state's coastline using various tree species to protect against natural disasters. The Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) is also actively contributing, planning new urban green spaces and a significant climate project focused on water management to make the city more climate-resilient. Moving forward, the Tirupati Greening Corporation will be officially registered under the Andhra Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2001, following the state's AP-GREEN guidelines. This legal framework will empower it to coordinate tree planting and conservation efforts across all sectors, from agricultural lands to urban parks. The focus will not only be on planting new trees but also on restoring damaged land and using technology like geo-tagging and artificial intelligence to monitor plant survival, showing a modern approach to environmental protection.
