A new study from UT Health San Antonio has unveiled a surprising connection: regularly sleeping for unusually long hours might be a subtle early warning sign for Alzheimer's disease. Researchers found that older adults who consistently clock eight-and-a-half to nine hours or more of sleep per night showed higher levels of a specific Alzheimer's-related protein in their blood, called phosphorylated tau 181 (p-tau181), with levels rising sharply past ten hours. This isn't about blaming sleep for brain decline; rather, the study suggests that excessive sleep duration could be a 'behavioral footprint' reflecting changes already happening in the brain. The findings, which involved over 2,400 participants from the long-running Framingham Heart Study, held true even after accounting for other health factors like age, gender, and genetic predispositions like the APOE ε4 genotype. This research builds on previous work from 2025 by the same institution that linked long sleep to worse cognitive performance, especially in people with depression. While the study, published in 'Alzheimer's & Dementia', doesn't say long sleep causes Alzheimer's, it highlights a need for monitoring sleep patterns as a potential early indicator of risk.
