UP's Raksha Bandhan Gift: Women and One Companion Ride State Buses Free This Week

In a significant move ahead of Raksha Bandhan, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced free bus travel for all women across state-run buses, with the added benefit of one accompanying companion also riding free. This initiative by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath administration will be available for three days, starting from 6 AM on August 27 and extending until midnight on August 29, 2026, ensuring convenient and safe festival travel. This annual tradition, established since 2017, aims to ease the burden on women traveling to celebrate the cherished festival of Raksha Bandhan with their families. The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) is bolstering its services, deploying additional buses and cancelling employee leaves to manage the expected surge in passengers, particularly on high-demand inter-district routes. The Transport Department, along with police and local administration, has been instructed to coordinate efforts, focusing on enhanced surveillance, drinking water, and cleanliness at bus stations to ensure a smooth and secure experience for travelers. As millions prepare for the Shravan Purnima festivities on August 28, this extended free travel period is expected to facilitate family reunions across the state. Travelers are advised to plan their journeys, anticipate heavier crowds, and utilize the added services.
