In a significant move to tackle the growing mental health crisis among its youth, the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government is rolling out a comprehensive Student Mental Health and Well-Being Policy for all higher education institutions across the state. This groundbreaking initiative will see the establishment of dedicated Mental Health Support Cells in every college and university, aiming to create a safer and stress-free academic environment for students. The new policy is a direct response to the alarming rise in mental health challenges, including academic pressure, examination anxiety, and career-related stress, which have led to increased suicide rates among students nationwide. Under the ambitious plan, a coordinated three-tier support system will be set up at state, district, and institutional levels, overseen by a Steering Committee chaired by the Principal Secretary, Higher Education. An Online Mental Health Portal will also be launched for initial assessments and support, alongside extensive training for faculty, non-faculty staff, and student representatives to spot early signs of distress. As the policy gets underway, the Higher Education Department plans to develop an Integrated portal and dashboard for ongoing monitoring and effective implementation. The focus extends beyond just counselling, incorporating awareness campaigns, workshops, sports, cultural activities, and career counselling to foster holistic personality development among students. This proactive approach aims to build a robust support framework, ensuring student privacy and dignity are upheld throughout, marking a critical step toward prioritizing mental wellness in Uttar Pradesh's academic landscape.
