Uttar Pradesh is buzzing after its Sugar Industry and Cane Development Department recently unveiled four new high-potential sugarcane varieties at the International Trade Show in Greater Noida: Co.Sha. 19231, Co.Sha. 18231, Co.Sha. 13235, and Co.Sha. 17231. Developed by the Uttar Pradesh Council of Sugarcane Research (UPCSR), these 'superstar' varieties promise to significantly enhance sugarcane productivity, improve sugar recovery, and directly boost the income of millions of sugarcane farmers across the state. They're also armed with strong resistance against the devastating red rot disease, a major relief for growers. This breakthrough arrives at a critical juncture for Uttar Pradesh, India's largest sugarcane producer, which has seen its sugar output drop due to older varieties like Co 0238 (Karan 4) becoming increasingly susceptible to red rot. The state government has been actively supporting its 4.8 million sugarcane farmers, recently hiking the State Advised Price (SAP) for the 2025-26 season to ₹400 per quintal for early varieties. Alongside, initiatives like the Panchamrit Yojana promote modern farming techniques, and the Ganna Krishak Samman Yojana offers incentives for excellence, all aimed at fostering a more resilient and profitable sugar economy. As these new varieties begin to reach farmers, the focus will be on rapid adoption and effective disease management to restore and exceed previous productivity levels. While India's sugar sector anticipates a recovery in the 2026-27 marketing year, the success of these new varieties is crucial for Uttar Pradesh continued dominance in sugar and ethanol production, especially with challenges like declining cane acreage due to rising input costs. The industry will also watch for policy adjustments that balance farmer remuneration with mill profitability, ensuring a sweet future for all.
