Uttarakhand is aggressively pushing its 'Aroma Revolution' with a recent international seminar on cinnamon, signaling a major drive to transform its agricultural landscape and bolster rural livelihoods through medicinal and aromatic plant cultivation. Agriculture Minister Ganesh Joshi inaugurated a two-day international seminar and workshop on cinnamon at the Perfumery and Aromatic Research and Development Institute in Selaqui on June 11, 2026, underscoring the state's commitment to becoming a leading 'Aroma Hub' in India. At the core of this initiative is the Uttarakhand Aroma Revolution Policy 2026-36, or 'Mahak Kranti Niti,' approved in September 2025 and launched by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in December 2025. The ambitious policy targets expanding aromatic crop cultivation to approximately 23,000 hectares, integrating nearly 100,000 farmers, and projecting an increase in the sector's turnover from the current ₹100 crore to ₹1,200 crore within the next decade. This strategy aims to diversify agriculture, particularly in the challenging mountainous terrains, offering farmers a lucrative alternative less susceptible to wildlife damage and providing substantial cultivation subsidies up to 80% for small landholdings. Looking ahead, the policy envisages the development of seven specialized 'Aroma Valleys' across districts like Pithoragarh for Timur and Champawat/Nainital for Cinnamon, alongside an aroma park in Kashipur, dedicated to research, processing, and value addition. Further strengthening the ecosystem, the Centre for Aromatic Plants (CAP) is expanding its outreach with five new satellite centers, while partnerships with industry giants like Dabur India Ltd. for Timur cultivation and marketing indicate a robust public-private synergy. These coordinated efforts, including plant distribution programs under Aroma Mission Phase III by CSIR-IIIM Jammu, are critical for realizing Uttarakhand's vision of a thriving, aroma-driven rural economy and positioning the state as a significant player in the global herbal market.
