In a pivotal move for India's financial sector, Nagaraju Maddirala, a highly respected retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and former Secretary of the Department of Financial Services (DFS), has been appointed as the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) for a two-year term. His appointment, confirmed by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) on October 12, follows the conclusion of Nand Kishore tenure and marks a significant leadership change as IL&FS nears the final stages of its massive debt resolution. Maddirala's extensive background in finance and public administration, including stints in the Ministry of Coal and the Department of Economic Affairs, brings critical experience to the table as the government-appointed board continues to steer IL&FS out of its 2018 crisis. This comes at a crucial juncture; as of June 30, 2026, the beleaguered group had successfully discharged a substantial Rs 50,387 crore of debt, achieving over 82.6% of its ambitious Rs 61,000 crore resolution target. The overall resolution value, including cash and other assets, now stands at an impressive Rs 57,556 crore, representing more than 94% of the target, with 205 out of 302 group entities already resolved. The immediate focus for Maddirala will be to accelerate the resolution of the remaining 41 entities and ensure the seamless completion of the asset monetisation program. His appointment signals the government's commitment to robust oversight of IL&FS, a Systemically Important Non-Deposit Accepting Core Investment Company (CIC), until its complete financial stabilization. Observers will be closely watching how his leadership impacts the final recovery phase and reinforces confidence in India's infrastructure financing landscape.
