State lawmakers advance bill to keep immigration detention centers out of communities like suburban Broadview
Illinois state lawmakers have advanced a bill aimed at restricting the future placement of immigration detention centers near sensitive community locations like schools and residences, moving it out of a House committee despite unanimous Republican opposition. The legislation, championed by House Speaker Emanuel Welch and Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson, would prohibit new facilities within 1,500 feet of various public and private spaces, though it would not affect the existing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing center in Broadview.
